Staff Backend Engineer, Revenue

Every dollar of Zapier's revenue flows through Revenue Zone, the team that builds and operates the infrastructure behind billing, subscriptions, payments, pricing, entitlements, and checkout across everything Zapier ships. As a Staff Engineer you will own the technical vision and long-term architecture for this zone: defining the pricing primitives, service boundaries, and data models that let Zapier ship pricing and packaging changes in days instead of months, while keeping every dollar accounted for accurately. This is production-critical, finance-grade infrastructure where correctness is non-negotiable, and decisions here ripple across how the company monetizes its next phase of growth.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a technical leader within Revenue Zone, partnering with Engineering, Product, and Design to shape strategy and translate business context into technical direction.
• Define and evolve the architectural direction of the zone, balancing near-term delivery with long-term durability, extensibility, and operational excellence.
• Lead high-impact initiatives: decoupling billing from account systems, clarifying service boundaries, and consolidating pricing infrastructure into flexible, configuration-driven foundations for pricing and packaging experimentation.
• Own and strengthen revenue-critical systems across Billing, Pricing, Payments, Checkout, and Entitlements, ensuring they are resilient, observable, and correct, with proactive detection and safe rollback mechanisms.
• Guide high-impact technical decisions across API design, data modeling, caching strategies, and system architecture.
• Identify performance bottlenecks and deliver optimizations that show up in the metrics: reduced latency, improved reliability, and improved conversion and retention.
• Mentor engineers, conduct thoughtful code reviews, and champion documentation and developer experience across the zone.

Qualifications

• Proven engineering impact in complex production systems at scale; many strong candidates have 8+ years of experience, but Zapier hires for impact and capability, not tenure.
• Strong domain knowledge in billing systems, subscription management, payment processing, or financial platforms, including metered billing, pricing models, entitlements, and revenue recognition.
• Experience designing APIs that serve multiple consumers and evolving systems without breaking existing integrations.
• A track record of resolving performance bottlenecks through profiling, caching, and database optimization.
• Cross-team leadership with end-to-end ownership: gathering requirements, surfacing risks early, and driving ambiguous problems to measurable outcomes.
• Comfort in large, mature codebases and judgment about where AI coding tools accelerate delivery and where human review of revenue logic is non-negotiable.
