Location still sets the rate.
Companies whose reputation says one thing and whose policy says another. Pay transparency and equal pay across locations are different promises, and only one of them is about where you live.
-
Zone-based since 4 April 2024: zone 2 pays 80% of zone 1, zone 3 60%, zone 4 40%. Staff hired earlier are "grandfathered in" on the old location-independent policy, so pay can differ by start date.
Company source Sourcegraph handbook, compensation -

Company source Compensation at GitLab -
Publishes every salary and has done for a decade, and has applied a cost of living multiplier throughout, benchmarked against San Francisco using Numbeo's index.

Corrections
If your company belongs here, or an entry is out of date, send us the page that says so. Every entry here was read on the company's own pages. Anything we could only find on somebody else's list came off rather than going on with a caveat.
Everything on the job board publishes a salary and is fully remote, which is the same standard applied to listings rather than employers. The salary index is what those listings add up to.
