Creative Director, Brand Studio
GitHub $140.4K - $372.3K/year Posted 4 days ago
About the role
GitHub is looking for a Creative Director to lead its Brand Studio, the creative design team responsible for shaping how GitHub shows up in the world. The studio creates the visual identity and creative systems behind GitHub's most important moments, from global events and product launches to executive presentations, social content, blog storytelling, motion, and illustration. GitHub wants a creative leader who can guide a world-class team without over-directing it: someone who translates executive priorities, brand strategy, and product narratives into clear creative direction, protects focus, raises the bar, and creates the conditions for great creative work rather than getting into every pixel. The role reports to the VP of Global Brand and Marketing and leads a tight-knit team of brand designers, motion designers, illustrators, and presentation designers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Brand Studio team with clear creative direction, strong people leadership, and thoughtful prioritization across a broad range of brand work.
- Translate business, brand, product, and executive signals into compelling creative strategy and actionable direction.
- Partner closely with brand strategy, marketing, events, communications, social, web, and executive stakeholders so the GitHub brand shows up with clarity and consistency.
- Guide the development of visual systems for campaigns, events, launches, executive storytelling, editorial content, and presentations.
- Champion the GitHub visual identity, keeping the brand distinct, modern, developer-authentic, and creatively ambitious.
- Evolve scalable creative systems, templates, guidelines, and design practices that let the brand travel consistently across teams, channels, and regions.
- Coach and develop a talented team of creative specialists, growing each person's impact while preserving the studio's autonomy and energy.
- Partner with external agencies, freelancers, and production partners when needed, holding outside work to GitHub's creative bar.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience in product or brand design (less with a relevant degree, or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years designing brand systems, visual identity, and creative production, including how design scales across marketing channels.
- 5+ years of people management experience, ideally leading senior creative talent without micromanaging.
- Strong stakeholder management instincts: pushing back with diplomacy, protecting creative quality, and keeping teams focused.
- Genuine curiosity about developers, software, AI, and open source, and the ability to balance creative ambition with business realities.
