About the role

GitHub's Billing team builds the systems behind how millions of developers and organizations pay for GitHub: metered billing infrastructure, granular spend controls, and accurate data reporting. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will work on systems that process transactions at scale, integrate with broader commerce infrastructure, and directly impact GitHub's revenue and trust. Engineering decisions here carry real financial and compliance consequences, and you will build deep expertise in a domain that is increasingly valuable across the industry. You do not need to be a payments expert, but you should be excited about systems that handle real money and keep billing accurate, reliable, and trustworthy at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the metered billing system serving millions of GitHub users, driving architectural decisions that balance reliability, scale, and developer velocity.
  • Work across the stack, from backend services to APIs to frontend experiences.
  • Guide the team in testing plans, success metrics, and customer feedback loops while ensuring system architecture meets security and compliance standards.
  • Mentor and grow engineers across the team and broader organization through pairing, thoughtful feedback, and engineering-wide practices.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot effectively and help the team figure out where they are most useful.
  • Collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams across GitHub and Microsoft on shared technical problems, including design and cross-cutting concerns.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response, and drive reliability improvements based on operational learnings.

Qualifications

  • 9+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, C#, or Java.
  • Preferred: hands-on experience building and operating Go services at scale in high-traffic production environments.
  • Preferred: experience with JavaScript and frontend frameworks like React.
  • Preferred: experience with metered billing, budgeting controls, invoicing, or similarly high-stakes transactional systems.
  • Preferred: a track record of driving technical decisions across teams through RFCs, design docs, and async collaboration.
