Principal Developer Advocate
1Password $212K - $318K/year Posted 4 days ago
About the role
Developer conversations have shifted away from owned web properties and in-person events toward just-in-time learning via generative AI and engagement in online communities. As Principal Developer Advocate, reporting to the Director of Developer Relations, you'll shape 1Password's advocacy function for this new era of developer learning. You'll foster and participate in direct, public conversations about AI security, publish authoritative content, and prioritize high-impact channels that drive product awareness, adoption, and feedback at scale. You'll also be the face of 1Password Developer Relations at major developer conferences such as AWS re:Invent and KubeCon.
Responsibilities
- Engage: create content that sparks engagement with current and potential 1Password developer community members, at scale, across channels.
- Build: engineer solutions to unsolved user needs that fill gaps, validate approaches, and inspire secure engineering practices, in collaboration with users and 1Password partners.
- Advocate: synthesize feedback and conversations with community members and partners into actionable insights that improve user-facing workflows.
- Strategize: use data to evaluate engagement channels and prioritize the ones that generate awareness and adoption at scale.
- Speak: present at the largest and highest-stakes developer conferences, including KubeCon and re:Invent, and leverage those interactions for long-term impact.
- Enable: build tools and training (speaking training, talk templates, engagement guidelines) that scale advocacy beyond the DA team.
Qualifications
- 10+ years in technical roles including software or platform engineering, developer advocacy, or solution engineering, with deep familiarity with modern development workflows.
- 5+ years engaging with developers in visible, public-facing roles and advocating for their needs cross-functionally.
- Experience navigating sensitive and complex community situations with humility, empathy, judgment, tact, and humor.
- Experience collaborating with partners on technical and product marketing integrations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication across formats: conference talks, blog posts, tutorials, videos, social media, demo code, and reference architectures.
- A trusted, credible voice in the industry with a large technical audience that uses your perspective to shape real-world technical choices.
- Bonus: experience with security-conscious developer communities or products (Identity, Auth, DevSecOps).
