Staff Software Engineer, Mac Cloud

GitHub Actions processes billions of CI/CD jobs monthly, and the Mac Cloud team owns the macOS platform within Actions, spanning cloud infrastructure, networking, security, and distributed systems. As a hands-on Staff Software Engineer, you will set technical direction for the macOS platform, lead cross-team efforts to deliver durable platform capabilities, and raise the bar on scalability, reliability, and operational excellence, guiding design and execution from early architecture through rollout and long-term operational ownership.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing, and code reviews to encourage the growth of others.
• Own and advocate for the health and quality of the team's systems, including on-call first responder rotations and live incidents.
• Write architecture briefs and proposals and carry out code experiments.
• Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.
• Use CI/CD tooling to set up automated pipelines for continuous integration and delivery.
• Guide teams in developing testing plans, defining success metrics, and integrating customer feedback while meeting security and compliance standards.
• Apply debugging tools and telemetry to verify assumptions, proactively resolve issues, and optimize performance.
• Drive a technical roadmap that aligns with product goals and incorporates new technologies where applicable.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, C#, or Java.
• Preferred: experience with scripting languages, cloud environments, and CNCF concepts.
• Preferred: large-scale system architecture and design experience in cloud-based environments, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
• Preferred: experience building or operating CI/CD systems at scale.
• Preferred: experience developing on macOS or iOS platforms.
