Senior Software Engineer

GitHub Actions powers automation for millions of developers, processing billions of CI/CD jobs monthly from simple builds to complex multi-environment deployment pipelines. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Actions team, you will help own the core infrastructure and services behind this platform, architecting high-performance systems and driving technical execution from design through production alongside engineers focused on distributed systems, container orchestration, security, and cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
• Provide mentorship, pairing opportunities, and code reviews to encourage the growth of others.
• Own and advocate for the health and quality of the team's systems, including on-call first responder rotations and live incidents.
• Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.
• Help design isolation mechanisms for untrusted code execution and partner with Security teams to protect Actions services against vulnerabilities.
• Improve system reliability, reduce incident response times, and establish best practices for monitoring, alerting, and runbooks.
• Contribute to comprehensive testing strategies, success metrics, and continuous improvement driven by customer feedback.
• Support a technical roadmap aligned with product goals, incorporating new technologies where applicable.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, C#, or Java.
• Preferred: 2+ years of technical leadership experience.
• Preferred: 3+ years with general purpose languages such as Go or Ruby, plus scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
• Preferred: experience building or operating CI/CD systems at scale.
