Staff Software Engineer

GitHub Planning and Tracking is a market-leading service for managing and tracking work alongside the code where it happens, spanning GitHub Issues and Projects. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be a leader and multiplier within a distributed team, designing, prototyping, shipping, and supporting highly performant user experiences while uncovering and solving foundational scaling and user-experience problems that unlock further Copilot integration into existing and future Issues and Projects. Ideally you are comfortable across the stack but tilt towards the front-end, with experience shipping customer-facing AI-powered tools.

Responsibilities

• Build experiences that millions of people love and use every day, helping them be more productive and collaborate more effectively.
• Take ownership of GitHub.com, contributing to and improving the code base from day one.
• Write, review, and maintain code primarily in JavaScript (React, TypeScript) and Ruby (Rails).
• Write architecture briefs and proposals, carry out code experiments, and build prototypes aimed at planetary scale.
• Foster technical growth across the team by researching new approaches, sharing insights, and guiding their practical adoption.
• Work closely with engineering leadership to guide technical investment and implement technical roadmaps and priorities.
• Coordinate with engineering and product leads to define, prioritize, and task projects that meet business objectives.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing opportunities, and code reviews.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software.
• Preferred: 5+ years of hands-on experience in modern web stacks such as Rails, Go, React, MySQL, and GraphQL.
• Preferred: 1+ years working remotely as part of a distributed engineering team.
• Strong customer focus, a data-driven approach, and excellent analytical skills.
• Clear and effective communication, whether writing code, writing emails, or explaining complex technical issues to non-technical co-workers.
