About the role

Zapier is becoming the governed action, context, and execution layer for AI agents, the platform enterprises trust to let AI act on their real systems safely. The Enterprise engineering organization builds the foundation that promise depends on: identity, access, audit, and administrative control that hold up whether the actor is a human clicking through a Zap, code running on a schedule, or an AI agent operating on its own. As Director of Engineering you will lead this organization into its next phase of growth, spanning identity and access management, audit and compliance infrastructure, admin tooling, AI and agent governance, and enterprise customer-facing engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the strategy and roadmap for Zapier's Enterprise Governance bet, in partnership with Product and Design leaders and connected explicitly to the company-wide agent strategy.
  • Own the technical roadmap for the systems that let enterprises govern AI acting on their behalf: identity and permissions for agents, audit trails for actions, and policy controls that scale beyond human-only usage.
  • Be accountable for the reliability of Zapier's identity, audit, and admin infrastructure, including the Tier-1 services enterprise customers depend on most.
  • Define what safe, accountable AI-native engineering practice looks like for your teams: code review, on-call ownership, and quality bars for agent-authored work.
  • Partner directly with Sales, Customer Success, and enterprise customers to translate real deal and support needs into a defensible engineering roadmap.
  • Step in during major incidents, coordinating cross-functional resources and setting stakeholder expectations when severity demands senior leadership involvement.
  • Develop managers and ICs with clear growth paths and honest feedback, and own the output and outcomes of your teams and the systems they run.

Qualifications

  • Governance mindset: you understand that identity, access control, audit, and policy are trust infrastructure, not compliance checkboxes, and you have built or led systems where getting this wrong has real consequences.
  • Experience scaling engineering organizations through structural change: leading teams of managers and technical leads through shifting operating models, redefined ownership, and new ways of working.
  • A track record of strong service ownership models, clear on-call practices, and durable quality bars in fast-growing organizations.
  • Deep customer and stakeholder orientation, with credibility partnering with go-to-market teams on what enterprise-ready actually means in practice.
  • Data-driven approaches to measuring delivery, reliability, and quality, used to make real investment tradeoffs.
  • Hands-on fluency with AI coding agents and orchestration tools, and a concrete point of view on how they change good engineering practice.
