Staff Software Engineer, Copilot AI Models

GitHub is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the GitHub Copilot AI Models team. The role focuses on building, maintaining, and evolving a robust, scalable, and reliable platform that powers GitHub Copilot and its integrations: highly available backend services and APIs that support Copilot features with consistent, performant, and safe access at scale. The ideal candidate has experience building and operating distributed systems in production, enjoys working close to the details of system behavior, reliability, and performance, and cares about balancing latency, cost, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing opportunities, and code reviews to encourage the growth of others.
• Own and advocate for the health and quality of the systems the team builds, including participating in on-call and first responder rotations.
• Write architecture briefs and proposals, carry out code experiments, and build prototypes to learn how to achieve planetary scale.
• Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.
• Utilize CI/CD tools to set up automated pipelines for continuous integration and delivery.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of experience in software engineering or a related technical discipline delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Preferred: 4+ years of experience with one or more scripting languages (Bash, Python, or similar).
• Preferred: 4+ years of experience with general purpose programming languages (Go, Ruby, or similar).
• Preferred: 5+ years of experience with cloud environments and/or Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) concepts.
