About the role
As a Staff Software Engineer on GitHub's Monolith Fitness teams, you will enhance the collaboration experience for millions of developers by keeping GitHub's core application stack healthy, resilient, and scalable. Working with a distributed, diverse, and passionate team, you will design, prototype, implement, ship, and support highly performant solutions that support developers working across the entire application stack at GitHub.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services, taking pride in writing maintainable code.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing, and code reviews to encourage the growth of others and uphold quality standards.
- Own and advocate for the health and quality of the team's systems, participating in on-call first responder rotations and live incidents.
- Write architecture briefs and proposals, carry out code experiments, and automate processes to make them repeatable and consistent.
- Design and implement APIs for seamless integration between software components, and set up automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and lead discussions on technical solutions, including design and cost considerations.
- Guide others in developing testing plans, defining success metrics, and integrating customer feedback while meeting security and compliance standards.
- Apply debugging tools and telemetry to verify assumptions, resolve issues proactively, and optimize performance and maintainability.
- Drive a technical roadmap aligned with product goals, strategically prioritizing engineering efforts.
Qualifications
- 9+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python (less with a relevant degree, or equivalent experience).
- Preferred: demonstrated experience with large-scale system architecture in cloud-based environments, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
- Preferred: experience across the stack with technologies such as Ruby, React, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, MySQL, Cosmos DB, or Elasticsearch, plus telemetry tooling like Datadog or Sentry.
- Preferred: experience building and operating planetary-scale API platforms, including monitoring, performance optimization, and API standards such as OpenAPI.
- Preferred: familiarity with GraphQL at scale (federation, routers, schema management) and with queuing and streaming systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ.
