About the role
GitHub's Git Systems Engineering team runs the largest code-hosting platform in the world, owning the services that store and serve Git repositories both directly to users and to other layers of the GitHub stack, including the microservices, protocols, proxies, and control systems that power Git operations at scale. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will take on wide-reaching, cross-team work to improve the code-hosting platform, designing and supporting highly performant, scalable, and available services that enable the next generation of AI-driven software development. The group is highly distributed and thrives on excellent written, asynchronous communication.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services, building deep familiarity with the systems you own.
- Document architectural designs and proposals, run targeted experiments, and validate approaches with prototypes.
- Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible, maintainable code used across products and integrated with downstream dependencies.
- Provide technical leadership through code reviews, designing for high availability and GitHub-scale performance.
- Coordinate with engineering and product owners to define, prioritize, and deliver projects that meet business goals.
- Maintain live service operations on a rotational on-call basis and build mitigations for complex live-site issues.
- Cultivate an environment where team members are empowered and demonstrate a strong sense of ownership and belonging.
Qualifications
- 9+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as C, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
- Preferred: experience with cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services.
- Preferred: understanding of production system monitoring and observability.
- Preferred: large-scale system architecture and design experience in cloud environments, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
- Preferred: experience working closely with product management and design to drive cross-functional projects.
