About the role
Every notification Discord sends goes through one team, and this role leads it.
Notifications sits in the Growth organisation and owns more than the send path: the platform and infrastructure underneath it, the orchestration layer that decides globally across notification types what is worth sending, the in-app notification centre, and the user-facing settings. The stack named in the posting is Elixir services, Python backends, pubsub and streaming pipelines, and the Kubernetes infrastructure holding them up, fanning out to hundreds of millions of users. The posting wants an engineering manager who is explicitly infrastructure-minded and hands-on, stays close to the technical decisions the team makes, and can discuss them in depth with anyone at Discord. Other teams at Discord consume these primitives, so part of the job is evolving a platform with internal customers.
Asks are 5+ years as a software engineer with significant time on backend or infrastructure systems at scale, plus 2+ years managing. Useful rather than required: having shipped push notifications or other re-engagement systems at consumer scale, including the deliverability, throttling and policy side, and having owned a shared platform other engineering teams depend on. The band is base salary only, with equity and benefits on top, and it is the widest management band on the board. Remote, US.
