Senior Product Designer, AI
GitLab $140K - $200K/year Posted 4 days ago
About the role
As a Senior Product Designer on GitLab's AI Product Design team, you will help build the next generation of intelligent software development experiences, bringing rigorous design craft to some of the hardest interaction problems in the industry. You will own the design process end-to-end, from ambiguous early exploration through polished, shipped experiences: designing intuitive interfaces for AI agents, creating seamless chat experiences for developers, and establishing design patterns that make advanced AI capabilities feel natural and accessible. Example projects include Duo Workflow (AI agents across the SDLC), Duo Chat, and AI-powered code suggestions and review tools.
Responsibilities
- Own the design process: drive end-to-end design across GitLab's AI suite, creating flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs, and knowing when AI is the right solution versus a traditional approach.
- Ship and iterate: break complex AI experiences into releases that fit GitLab's cadence without sacrificing quality, define success criteria upfront, and use evidence to drive decisions with PM, Engineering, and Technical Writing.
- Set the craft bar through strong visual and interaction design, providing constructive feedback that raises the level of work around you.
- Define strategic direction: bring validated user evidence and a strong point of view to roadmap discussions, using journey maps, storyboards, and design explorations.
- Enable the broader team by contributing AI-specific patterns to the Pajamas Design System and helping designers across the product apply AI capabilities effectively.
- Mentor other designers, participate in hiring, and share knowledge generously.
Qualifications
- A strong portfolio showing how you think and iterate, ideally including AI/ML products, agentic workflows, or natural language interfaces where user control, transparency, and trust were key considerations.
- Experience designing for AI workflows, understanding the unique challenges of multi-step, agentic, or automated processes.
- A high bar for craft in interaction and visual design.
- Experience conducting research and translating findings into clear, well-reasoned design decisions.
- Proven ability to work iteratively in agile product development, balancing speed with quality.
- Experience designing in complex enterprise contexts, with working knowledge of Git, HTML/CSS, accessibility best practices, and design systems.
- Excellent communication skills: simplifying complexity, articulating design rationale, and bringing people along.
