About the role

GitHub Actions is the backbone of CI/CD workflows across GitHub, processing billions of jobs monthly from simple builds to complex deployment pipelines. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Actions team, you will architect and deliver the core infrastructure and services that make this possible, driving technical execution from design through production and leading initiatives across distributed teams tackling challenges in distributed systems, container orchestration, security, and cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing, and code reviews; support teams in producing extensible, maintainable code.
  • Own and advocate for the health and quality of the team's systems, including on-call first responder rotations and live incidents.
  • Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.
  • Champion security across GitHub Actions by designing isolation mechanisms for untrusted code execution, ensuring compliance with enterprise security requirements, and partnering with Security teams against vulnerabilities.
  • Champion operational excellence by improving system reliability, reducing incident response times, and establishing best practices for monitoring, alerting, and runbooks.
  • Lead the team in comprehensive testing strategies, success metrics, and customer feedback loops.
  • Drive a technical roadmap aligned with product goals, adopting new technologies and methodologies where they fit.

Qualifications

  • 9+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, C#, or Java.
  • Preferred: 2+ years of technical leadership experience.
  • Preferred: 3+ years with general purpose languages such as Go or Ruby, plus scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
  • Preferred: experience building or operating CI/CD systems at scale.
