About the role

GitHub is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Git Systems Engineering team, which runs the largest code-hosting platform in the world as part of the Platform and Infrastructure organization. The group is responsible for the services that store and serve Git repositories, both directly to users and to other layers in the GitHub software stack, building the microservices, protocols, proxies, and control systems that power Git operations at GitHub and operating them at scale. The team is highly distributed and thrives on asynchronous communication, and the role focuses on wide-reaching, cross-team work: designing, rolling out, and supporting highly performant, highly scalable, and highly available services.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services, building deep familiarity with the systems you own.
  • Document architectural designs and proposals, run targeted experiments, and validate approaches with prototypes.
  • Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products and integrated with downstream dependencies.
  • Provide technical leadership through code reviews, designing for high availability and GitHub-scale performance.
  • Coordinate with engineering and product owners to define, prioritize, and deliver projects that meet business goals.
  • Maintain operations of live services on a rotational on-call basis, building solutions and mitigations for complex issues impacting live services.

Qualifications

  • 11+ years of experience in software engineering or a related technical discipline delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred: experience with cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.
  • Preferred: understanding of production system monitoring and observability.
  • Preferred: demonstrated experience with large-scale system architecture and design in cloud-based environments, with a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
  • Preferred: experience working closely with product management, design, and other engineering teams to drive cross-functional projects.
