Staff Product Manager
GitHub $140.4K - $372.3K/year Posted 3 days ago
About the role
GitHub's API is one of the most widely used developer APIs in the world, with millions of developers and hundreds of thousands of integrations depending on it. Built for a pre-AI era of human-driven integrations, it must now serve enterprise customers at massive scale, AI agents running continuously and reacting to events in real time, and a developer ecosystem that expects full programmatic access to everything in the UI. As Staff Product Manager you will own the platform's evolution across real-time delivery, scale and reliability, API parity, and consumption economics.
Responsibilities
- Define the shift from request/response to a subscription-based, ordered event-stream model, including delivery guarantees, filtering, and solutions for CLI-based agents that cannot receive webhooks.
- Define reliability and performance expectations at the highest scale, own the resilience and capacity roadmap, and hold each product area accountable for the scalability of its API surface.
- Determine which API parity gaps matter most, how to close them, and drive cross-team execution.
- Design a consumption pricing model that recovers serving costs, creates margin on higher-value consumption, and incentivizes efficient usage without fracturing the ecosystem.
- Identify and prioritize developer needs through customer engagement, feedback, and market trends, acting as the voice of the customer in every conversation.
- Lead growth experiments and adoption campaigns, and communicate product vision through executive briefings, blog posts, and developer community channels.
- Drive systematic, metrics-based decision making and track consumption economics as traffic grows.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in product, service, or program management, software development, or product design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2+ years developing deep expertise in developer tools and workflows, enabling clear translation of developer requirements into roadmap-ready features.
- Experience building and shipping APIs or event-driven platforms at scale.
- Experience delivering product roadmap and status updates to executive leadership.
- Preferred: experience with consumption-based, usage-based, or metered pricing models.
- Preferred: experience with event-driven architecture, streaming systems, or real-time delivery (webhooks, pub/sub, SSE, WebSocket).
