About the role
As a Senior Software Engineer on GitHub's Data Engineering team, you will design, prototype, implement, ship, and support the data services behind experiences that millions of developers depend on. You will work closely with a distributed, diverse, and passionate community of engineers and designers, building scalable pipelines and datastores in a culture that believes how we do things is as important as what we do.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services, taking pride in maintainable code.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing, and code reviews to encourage the growth of others and uphold quality standards.
- Own and advocate for the health and quality of the team's systems, participating in on-call first responder rotations and live incidents.
- Write architecture briefs and proposals and carry out code experiments.
- Design and implement APIs for seamless integration between components, and set up automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and lead discussions on technical solutions, including design and cost considerations.
- Guide others in developing testing plans, defining success metrics, and integrating customer feedback while meeting security and compliance standards.
- Apply debugging tools and telemetry to verify assumptions, resolve issues proactively, and optimize performance.
- Support a technical roadmap aligned with product goals, adopting new technologies and methodologies where applicable.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of software engineering experience delivering production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python (less with a relevant degree, or equivalent experience).
- Preferred: experience with large-scale system architecture in cloud environments and a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
- Preferred: experience with scripting languages (Bash, Python, or similar) and with cloud environments or CNCF concepts.
- Preferred: experience with relational (MySQL) and especially non-relational datastores (Cosmos DB), ideally operating Cosmos DB clusters at scale.
- Preferred: experience with Azure resources such as Azure Storage (blob and table), Azure Redis Cache, and Azure Data Explorer clusters.
- Preferred: experience partnering with product management, design, and other engineering teams on cross-functional projects.
