About the role

DuckDuckGo is the online protection company, a remote-first team of 300+ on a mission to raise the standard of trust online, behind a private browser, search engine, and subscription used by millions. Working on the Privacy Functional Team, you will lead complex projects across key company-wide objectives, protecting the privacy of users with pragmatic, performant, testable code. Potential projects include designing systems for improving search indexes and AI features without compromising user privacy, building new features on top of the Tracker Radar crawler to detect emerging privacy threats, and implementing and maintaining privacy features like Web Tracking and Email Protections.

Responsibilities

  • Own major components of DuckDuckGo privacy technology, taking responsibility for their maintenance and improvement over time.
  • Write pragmatic, performant, testable code in Go, Node.js, Python, and sometimes Perl.
  • Design systems that improve search indexes and AI features while preserving strict privacy guarantees.
  • Build on the Tracker Radar crawler to detect emerging privacy threats across the web.
  • Participate in privacy review and audit processes, ensuring product developments align with the company privacy principles.
  • Formally mentor other engineers over time, supporting their career growth and the growth of the Privacy Team.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lead and collaborate on high-impact, complex projects from proposal through post-mortem.
  • Skills to wrangle vague problems, propose innovative solutions, and execute them effectively, involving others when necessary.
  • Experience working on privacy solutions in an engineering capacity, for example tracker blocking, differential privacy, or similar technology.
  • Deep technical understanding of online privacy threats and the existing solution space to protect against them.
  • Proficiency in any of the following: Go, Node.js, Python, Perl.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to validate decisions and communicate them clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
