Senior Staff Software Engineer - Builder Platform

Temporal makes the open-source durable execution platform of the same name and runs Temporal Cloud. The Builder Platform team delivers the internal platform Temporal uses as customer zero for agents, workflows and core engineering tools, then feeds what it learns back into Temporal's products.

As a senior staff engineer you would set multi-year technical direction across Agents and Workflows, AI Infrastructure, Developer Infrastructure and Productivity Engineering. The work covers the shared agent platform, LLM and MCP gateways with guardrails and cost controls, AI governance with Security and Legal, source-control and CI standards, and turning internal lessons into requirements for Temporal Cloud, the SDKs and open-source reference architectures. Mentoring senior technical leaders and on-call improvements are part of the job.

Temporal wants strong software engineering fundamentals, a record of setting technical direction across multiple teams, fluency with modern agentic coding tools, and deep skill in Go, TypeScript, Python or Java in developer infrastructure, distributed systems, AI platforms or platform engineering.

Pay is $208,000 to $341,250 a year depending on US location tier, plus equity. Remote in the United States or Canada.
